Eating Las Vegas

Well life has returned to normal after the wedding with both of us falling back into a routine, especially with Carlo starting school last week. It has been a bit hard to adjust to our everyday life in Vegas after the excitement of the wedding week. It has nothing to do with adjusting to marriage which has been pretty easy and the same as before even if I have to catch myself to make sure that I call Carlo my husband. It has just been hard after being surrounded by so many friends and family to come back to Vegas where we don’t have that same support system in place except with Michael, who really does keep us sane and entertained!

While Carlo and I don’t like a lot of things about Vegas, we are both unanimous in agreeing that Vegas has incredible food and we both love to discover new restaurants throughout the Valley. We love eating at the fancy restaurants on the Strip, but we also love finding hole in the wall ethnic restaurants from the many different cultures that live here.

Eating at the fancy restaurants on the Strip just got a whole lot cheaper this week as it is Las Vegas Restaurant Week when many restaurants offer 3 course meals for $50.08 with a portion of the proceeds going towards Three Square, a non-profit food distribution shelter that helps out the thousands of Vegas residents who live below the poverty line. (Many people think of Vegas as flowing with money, but our school district has one of the highest rates of free lunches given to children who can’t afford food in the nation).

Since Carlo and I like nothing better than helping the poor (and eating really good food), we have been taking advantage of all of these deals. On Monday night, we went to Craftsteak. We are both big fans of Tom Colicchio and love him as a judge on Top Chef, as well as his delicious sandwich place ‘Wichcraft. Their special three course menu was as incredible as it sounds. Unfortunately, they had run out of quail by the time we sat down for dinner due to their quail distributor having a big fire at their facility. We got really great prosciutto instead, but Carlo wished we could of had the quail instead. I think quail is kind of like crab and isn’t worth the hassle unless it is boned and wrapped in bacon, and the few quail legs that we saw other patrons eat had bones in them and they looked really awkward trying to eat it.

We also did the $20 wine pairing with the meal which included the largest pours of wine that I have ever seen in a wine pairing. We weren’t complaining though since we were served great wines from Dry Creek Valley, and we especially liked it when our waiter refilled our empty glasses too :) I’ve NEVER had that happen before in a wine pairing.

Normally, Carlo likes to take photos of all of the food, but he was a bit camera shy because he didn’t want to look like a food geek. I wish we did have pictures though because not only was the food beautifully presented, but it all tasted amazing. I think I might have licked the potato puree bowl clean if Carlo hadn’t of stopped me.

I think Carlo’s twitter from dinner sums up the great meal: “Just a note for those who don’t know: TOM COLICCHIO DOES NOT F*CK AROUND”

Anyway, we are off to a special dinner at Rick Moonen’s rm seafood tonight with Les who arrived in town today for a conference, and then we are going to go to Canyon Ranch Grill with him for dinner over the weekend.

I only wish that we had more days in the week, more money, and the ability to burn thousands of calories a day, so that we could try out some of the other incredible restaurants included in Restaurant week. At least, we have something to look forward to for next year!
