May trip to LA

Carlo and I went to LA at the end of May to hit up the “local” IKEA and get some new goodies for our new house. God knows why Vegas doesn’t have an IKEA since we are a population of 2 million residents and everyone is totally transient. Plus who wouldn’t love trashing and beating the crap out of their IKEA furniture when their houses are getting foreclosed on them, which seems to be happening a lot here these days!

Despite the cheap Scandinavian object need, I made sure that we went and checked out the new BCAM at a LACMA which was depressingly underwhelming, both the Renzo Piano building and the Broad collection. The only good looking floor was the top floor with nice high ceilings and great sky lights, plus they had Jeff Koon’s Blue Balloon Dog which I would so pet and caress if I could ever afford the millions that the piece is worth. The other 2 floors were cramped and dark, especially the bottom floor with these amazing Richard Serra sculptures that Broad had actually donated to LACMA. I had hoped for more, but my opinions agreed with everyone else that had seen the new building and collection prior to me that it is a poor building and art bought at the height of the market, but not necessarily the best work by each of the artists included.

Carlo at the Chris Burden lampposts which are beautiful day or night, but better known by TomKat having their photos taken in front of them at the the BCAM opening.

We did go see the fabulous Kara Walker retrospective at the Hammer which is now traveling to the Fort Worth Worth Modern until October 19. Go see it! It is an incredible show. Carlo didn’t like it, but I loved it. If you want a totally truth-be-god view of race/sex relations in the US now and then, go see it. I love her work and I wasn’t disappointed in seeing the show at the Hammer, I only wish I could have seen more of her work!

For those wanting art recs, run don’t walk to see the Olafur Elliason retrospective at the Dallas Museum of Art opening October 19. We saw it at SFMOMA and we both totally loved it. I’m trying to figure out a weekend post-wedding that we can fly up to New York so I can see his Waterfalls.

If you want good pizza when you are in LA, you HAVE to check out Mozza . Oh my god, I’m not a big Mario Batali fan, but I do love La Brea Bakery and the combo of the two culinary minds is MIND BLOWING. Here is some food porn to enjoy. Seriously, I will just go back to LA to eat that incredible pizza. I’m a total pizza fiend and I found it somewhat ridiculous that Carlo got a 9:00pm reservation despite calling a month in advance, but damn, it was so good, I would wait hours for it. Waiting for such a late reservation actually worked to our favour, because I had drunk enough wine that I would talk to whomever that night, including the Mozza manager that sat down next to us and offered us a sample of everything that the kitchen sent out to her. She introduced us to (and gave us a few slices to take home) the most amazing pizza that I have ever eaten and I would NEVER have ordered if I hadn’t had a slice put in front of me: the Long cooked broccoli, caciocavallo & chiles. Sounds gross, but OH MY GOD! We had a few extra slices of pizza and all were gone before we even left LA County limits. It is awesome, go eat there. Plus, I got to see my first LA celeb sighting of Christine Lahti, but she cried while she was eating with her husband and two friends, so I felt kind of sad exploiting her on our blog with a photo.

In addition to the slow cooked broccoli pizza, you have to order:

Braised beef marrow sound disgusting, but is incredible – like foie gras but even better!
